NIBA — The Association for Introducing Brokers

35 Years of Advocacy, Finally with a Platform to Match

A modern member experience for a vital industry voice

For 35 years, NIBA has been the voice of introducing brokers in the heavily regulated financial services industry—advocating for their interests, providing continuing education, and connecting members with essential resources. When they came to us, their digital presence didn't reflect the vital role they play. We've partnered with them through two major platform evolutions, and we're now building their third: a modern Next.js platform launching in time for their 35th anniversary.

About the Client

NIBA (National Introducing Brokers Association) represents thousands of introducing brokers navigating the complex regulatory landscape of the financial services industry. They provide advocacy, education, networking, and resources to help members stay compliant and grow their businesses—working alongside FCM, CTA, and exchange partners to support the broader industry ecosystem.

The Full Story

The Challenge

When NIBA first engaged us, their website was a mostly static WordPress installation that had fallen years behind. It served as little more than a digital brochure—no membership management, no event registration, no member resources. For an organization whose value lies in connecting and supporting its members, this was a significant gap.

After addressing some pressing technical issues, it became clear that patching the old site wasn't enough. NIBA needed a platform that could actually deliver member value.

Our Solution: Phase 1 (WordPress Rebuild)

We retired the old site and built a comprehensive membership platform from scratch:

1. Tiered Membership System

True membership functionality supporting both free and paid tiers, with different access levels and benefits. Members could join, renew, and manage their accounts entirely online.

2. Partner Portal

Dedicated features for NIBA's FCM, CTA, and exchange partners—giving these key stakeholders their own presence within the platform and tools to connect with the membership.

3. Event Management

Comprehensive event planning capabilities for NIBA's conferences and networking events. Online registration, session scheduling, attendee management, and post-event resources—all integrated with the membership system.

4. Education & Compliance Toolbox

A complete resource center for continuing education requirements and legal guidance. In a heavily regulated industry, helping members stay compliant is one of NIBA's core value propositions.

5. Member Directory

A searchable directory helping members connect with each other—essential for an association built on industry relationships.

6. Service Provider Directory

A comprehensive listing of vetted service providers, giving members a trusted resource for finding partners and vendors.

The platform transformed NIBA's digital presence from a static brochure into a living hub of member value.

The Growing Pains

Success, as it often does, created new challenges.

As NIBA's membership grew and features expanded, WordPress began to strain under the weight:

  • Plugin proliferation — Each major feature required multiple plugins, creating a tangled web of dependencies
  • Compatibility nightmares — Plugin updates frequently broke other functionality, requiring careful testing and frequent fixes
  • Performance degradation — The member directory and resource libraries slowed noticeably as content volume increased
  • Server limitations — Two server upgrades bought time, but couldn't solve the underlying architectural constraints

The platform that had served them well was now holding them back.

Our Solution: Phase 2 (Next.js + Directus)

For NIBA's 35th anniversary, we're rebuilding their platform on modern architecture:

1. Next.js Frontend

Dramatically faster page loads and a smoother user experience—especially important for the content-heavy resource libraries and large directories.

2. Directus CMS

A flexible, API-first backend that gives NIBA's staff powerful content management without the plugin overhead. Complex membership logic and directory features that required multiple WordPress plugins now run natively.

3. Scalable Architecture

Built to handle continued growth in membership, content, and features without requiring infrastructure overhauls.

4. Budget-Friendly Transition

As a nonprofit association, NIBA operates on careful budgets. Our flexible payment options made the transition feasible—spreading costs over time rather than requiring a large upfront investment that might have been prohibitive.
